At Thriveworks, we may prescribe the following antipsychotic medications for the treatment of psychotic disorders and other mental health conditions:

FAQs about antipsychotic medications

What are antipsychotic medications and what do they do?

Antipsychotics are a class of medication primarily used to reduce the symptoms of psychosis, such as auditory and visual hallucinations. They may also be used to treat severe depression or mood disorders.

What is an antipsychotic medication used for?

Antipsychotic medications are most often used to treat the symptoms of conditions like schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and other psychotic disorders. They may also be used to treat other mental health disorders and as a supplement to other treatment.

Which neurotransmitter is affected by antipsychotic medications?

While more research is needed, it's generally thought that an overabundance of dopamine in certain neurological pathways can lead to hallucinations associated with psychotic disorders. Antipsychotics work by producing a complete or partial dopamine blockade, reducing the severity of these symptoms.

Can you overdose on antipsychotic medication?

Taking more than the prescribed amount of any medication can be harmful. In severe cases, an overdose of antipsychotic medication can lead to seizures, coma, hypotension, dysrhythmias and other complications.

What are the side effects of antipsychotic medications?

Common side effects of antipsychotic medications may include dry mouth, sedation, weight gain, dizziness, movement disorders, and raised cholesterol or blood glucose. Other more severe side effects may occur in rare cases. If you are taking an antipsychotic medication and experiencing side effects, consult with your clinician.

Can antipsychotic medication cause psychosis?

There is no research to support that antipsychotic medications cause or worsen psychosis. If you begin taking an antipsychotic medication and experience worsening symptoms, consult with your clinician.

Can I get a prescription online?

You can meet with a licensed provider at Thriveworks, in person or online depending on your state. If it’s clinically appropriate, they may prescribe medication for a diagnosed mental health condition. Your provider will send your prescription to a local pharmacy to be filled.

Can I use my health insurance for prescriptions and refills?

Thriveworks accepts most major insurance plans for psychiatry and therapy services. Your insurance may also cover the cost of any medication your provider prescribes, which can be filled at a local pharmacy. Check with your plan to confirm your medical and prescription coverage.

How do I get a prescription at Thriveworks?

Schedule a session with a licensed psychiatric provider at Thriveworks. After discussing your symptoms and treatment goals, your provider may recommend medication and/or additional services to help you get where you want to be.
